- 1). List the author(s) using standard name order, followed by a period. Capitalize the first letter of every word in the italicized title, directly followed by a period. Be sure to write "Ed." and then the editor’s name, followed by a period.
- 2). Include the city and state of publication, followed by a colon. Write the publisher’s name, followed by a comma. Be sure to include the date, followed by a period. Use quotation marks before and after literary chapter titles. Enclose the chapter number in parentheses, when it is the only identifying information. Give the page number first, followed by a semicolon. Add identifying information, including, but not limited to, the chapter number. Insert quotations after the parenthetical reference in which it occurs. Be sure to separate each chapter in the book with commas.
- 3). List chapter numbers in sources when needed. When referring to an article or topic, for example, that appears in chapters 14 through 16, list the chapter numbers on your Works Cited page as "14-16." Review your work product for consistency when handling literary issues throughout a lengthy manuscript or scholarly document. Using a consistent interpretation of MLA style takes practice, so you should compare different sections of your work for MLA uniformity.
- 1). Enclose the book title, chapter and verse inside parentheses. Capitalize the first letter of each word; do not include articles, unless they are the first word in the title. Be sure to insert a comma after the title.
- 2). Capitalize the first letter of the book in the Bible; use its abbreviated form. Use Arabic numbers to indicate the chapter and verse.
- 3). Always separate the chapter and verse with a period; separate the different chapters with a comma. Do not underline the various versions of the Bible or any of its 66 books. Do not enclose the different Bible versions in quotation marks, along with any of the 66 books.
