For over a century the mighty Mississippi River has linked the port city of New Orleans with the agricultural heart of the United States. During the Civil War and the War of 1812 the city played a key role in defense of the South. Both the British and the Union Generals saw the strategic value in possessing the Port of New Orleans. Today the Mississippi River is still linked to the success and survival of the city. When you cruise the Port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River in an old paddlewheeler, you will appreciate the size of the river and learn why it is so important to New Orleans today. - Paddlewheeler boats revolutionized travel on the Mississippi River.paddlewheeler image by wiladayvo from Fotolia.com
