Tourism of the Red River in New Mexico

    History

    • Red River was originally called River City when explorers and prospectors initially moved into the area looking for gold, copper and silver. Mines where established and eventually were depleted. In the 1920s and 1930s it became a mountain retreat for tourists which it remains today.

    Historic Places

    • There are many nationally registered historic buildings to see in Red River including the Pierce Fuller House, Melson-Oldham Cabin, Vet Mallette Cabin, Orrin Mallette Cabin and the Little Red School House Museum.

    Summer Activities

    • Tourists visiting in the summer can enjoy fishing, hiking, biking and white-water rafting. The city also hosts during a Memorial Day motorcycle rally, a wine festival, a pioneer day and music festival.

    Winter Activities

    • Red River is a winter retreat that offers a variety of winter activities including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobile rentals.

    Lodging

    • Accommodations are available in all price ranges from hotel rooms, bed and breakfast inns, mountain lodges, and rustic cabins.

    Dining

    • The city offers a wide variety of dining options from burgers to steaks to pizza. There are several Mexican establishments offering local cuisine.
