There are plenty of people who have their own garden and keep a big part of their organic waste.
These are the leaves, dead plants, and grass clippings that you take away to keep your garden looking pretty.
Most of these just go to the landfills and this is actually a waste of your time and money.
You waste the time of the garbage man, you waste your money for paying to get it removed, and you waste a good source of your own compost heap.
The garbage which you try to remove from your garden can actually be a lot better compared to chemicals and fertilizers.
If you are able to monitor the decomposition of that garbage, you can make sure that it is chemically altered so that it will be in a state which can provide good nutrition for the plants.
So before you decide to throw away anything, think of how you can use it for your compost heap.
Compost is often placed in one pile in an area of your backyard.
We often conjure negative images when we think of compost - rotting garbage that smells really awful.
But proper maintenance of this garbage can lead to great compost heap material which does not smell bad at all.
When I started maintaining my own compost heap, in a bid to be more environmental friendly, there were a lot of things that I did wrong.
I kept the pile from getting the oxygen that it needed and I failed to keep it dry.
They started to decompose in a way that is no longer useful to me and they started to smell really terrible.
To choose a spot for the compost heap, you should get one that has a high square footage.
A deep pile of compost is not desirable because the materials will not get what they need.
Instead, aim to spread the whole thing out in a big area.
If there is a tool shack or a shed in your garden, you can lay the materials on top of the roof.
I tried this a few times now and it helps me to keep the compost pile out of sight too.
Compost heaps can be made up of any form of organic garbage that can be found in the garden, yard, or even your kitchen.
You can put leaves and even left over food in it.
