Does your dog run all around the house and ignore your pleas for them to stop?Perhaps when you have your dog outside they will pull and yank on their leash in an attempt to escape while you are frantically yelling for them to stay.
Training your dog to stay is one of the most important aspects of training a dog.
What will be needed by the dog owner is simply a desire to teach their dog and some time set aside to really put some effort into this.
Even the most stubborn dogs will be able to learn to stay on command.
The first step is to find a quiet area to train your dog.
Training outside can bring all sorts of distractions such as people walking by, other dogs, noises, smells and more.
Therefore, it is recommended to train your dog to stay on command while you are in a quiet room indoors.
This will work best if you are able to do this in a rather large room.
However, using a small space will still work.
Have your dog sit in one corner of the room.
Slowly crawl away, approximately 5 or 6 feet.
If your dog immediately begins to follow you, say "no" and gently put your dog back into the starting position.
Do this as many times as necessary to make your canine friend sit still in the room.
Once you are far enough away that you cannot physically touch your dog, it will be time to begin the commands and actions of training your dog to stay.
While putting out your hand, as if you were stopping traffic, clearly and with authority in your voice, say the word, "Stay" and then slowly back away.
Repeat the word as youmove further and further away.
If you dog has remained in his spot, drop to his level, put your hand down and call him to you.
Give him lots of hugs, pats and happy excited words to show how pleased you are.
Keep repeating this; as your dog becomes more and more trained to stay, you should be able to increase the distance.
During the final stages, your dog should be able to remain seated while you are in a completely different room and he cannot see you.
At this point, you will know that you have successfully trained your dog to stay.
