Installing Glass Shower Stalls

    Planning the Shower Stall

    • 1). Determine where the shower stall will be installed. It may be part of an existing tub structure or a separate entity unto itself. If it is free standing, you may have to create a special place for its installation. If so, the assistance of a general contractor may be required.

    • 2). Decide the type of glass shower stall to be installed. That will include its size, shape, and structure, as well as its accessories.

    • 3). Check on local plumbing and building codes and ordinances that govern how shower stalls are to be installed. Make certain you have all of the information needed to do the job correctly.

    • 4). Apply for any necessary licenses and permits.

    • 5). Turn off the water turned off before beginning.

    Preparing for Installation

    • 1). Remove one or more wall sections as is necessary to expose the existing water pipes and/or where the new pipes will be installed.

    • 2). Make sure that both the hot and cold water pipelines can be accessed for the shower head. If not, figure out how the new pipelines will be installed. This will likely require the assistance of a licensed plumber.

    • 3). Cross check to make certain that the plumbing pipes chosen or installed are large enough to handle the amount of water pressure required for the shower based upon the showe rheads chosen.

    • 4). Check the flooring support structures to make certain that they are sufficient in strength and meet applicable building codes. If not, additional support structures may be required before moving forward. In that event, contact a general contractor for assistance.

    • 5). Establish the drain mechanism for the shower stall, including the installation of the shower pan. The system must drain properly and work within established plumbing codes. Install the drain for the structure.

    Install the Glass Shower Stall

    • 1). Install the glass shower stall and tub (if applicable). How this is accomplished will be dependent upon the type of structure to be installed. If it is a single structure, anchor the frame it to the walls as required by the stall's instructions and applicable building codes. If it is a multiple panel structure, install the stall one panel at a time as outlined in the product's instructional manual.

    • 2). Figure out where the shower head, spouts, handles, and other accessories should go on the front panel of the shower stall. Measure exactly where to make the necessary connections.

    • 3). Install the shower heads. If more than one is involved, make certain they are all installed before moving on to the next step.

    • 4). Have the basic plumbing inspected before proceeding further. The plumber will restore water and check pipes and connections for leaks and water pressure.

    • 5). Replace the exposed wall structures. Be sure to use moisture, mold and mildew resistant drywall. Seal the structure according to standard plumbing regulations.

    • 6). Set or have the tile set for the shower structure, including both the floor and the wall as is applicable. Make sure that it is properly sealed and caulked.

    • 7). Install any remaining spouts, levers, knobs and heads being sure to caulk around them as well.

    • 8). Set the shower doorplates into place. Add caulking as necessary to keep all seams water tight.

    • 9). Turn the water back on and make a final check for leaks and problems.
