      Veterinarians provide health care for all types of animals. Aspiring veterinarians should love animals and get along with their owners. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine and a state license are required. Students must complete or be in the process of completing undergraduate studies before applying to veterinary medical school.

    Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine

    • Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is located in Auburn, Alabama. Because of its strict enrollment requirements, admission into the program is very competitive. In fall 2010, only 95 out of 681 undergraduate applicants were accepted into the program.

      Applicants must have work or volunteer experience with animals. Alabama, Kentucky and West Virginia applicants need at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. All other applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants also must pass the general aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination. In order to graduate, students must have at least a C in all courses. While in the program, students study subjects such as parasitology and animal nutrition.

    Madison School of Veterinary Medicine

    • The Madison School of Veterinary Medicine is located in Madison, Wisconsin. High school students interested in attending Madison's veterinarian school should study biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry and English composition. Prior to the first year of college, students should decide which undergraduate degree they plan to pursue.

      The Madison School of Veterinary Medicine accepts only 80 undergraduates into the program per-year. According to the university's website, students are advised to make alternate plans in case they aren't accepted into veterinary medical school. Applicants must have at least 60 credits of undergraduate college course work. Students study subjects such as animal breeding and zoology.

    Purdue University School of Veterinarian Medicine

    • Purdue University School of Veterinarian Medicine is located West Lafayette, Indiana. Undergraduate students must meet strict requirements before admission into the program. Applicants must have two to three years of courses including chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, calculus and English composition. All courses require at least a grade of 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. Students in the veterinary program also study subjects such as toxicology and anatomy.

      Purdue also offers public veterinary services. The Veterinary Teaching hospital provides animal care for Indiana residents. The Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory diagnoses disease in poultry, pets, livestock and wildlife.

    College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University

    • The College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University is located in East Lansing, Michigan. The program receives more than 900 applicants per year, but only 108 spots are available. Applicants need at least at 2.8 GPA on all undergraduate coursework. However, meeting the GPA requirement does not guarantee a spot in the program. Students accepted into the program study topics such as veterinary medical terminology and small animal nursing skills.
