- 1). Help in reviving intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within the college student, but you can help her find this motivation. If you are the educator, allow students a choice in the different materials that are covered and learning activities. Feeling that their opinion matters and that they have a say in the course gives them a feeling of empowerment. If you are a friend or parent, talk with the student about why she is going to college, what her future plans are and what she would be doing if she was not enrolled. This will help the student to place a value on her education and see why it matters. Both of these options will help motivate her to keep going, attend classes and study harder.
- 2). Provide external motivation. External motivation comes from others and can be provided by professors and personal acquaintances alike. Praise and recognition of a job well done or effort given above and beyond requirements will motivate a college student to succeed. Professors can have students display answers on the board for math classes or discuss their thoughts and opinions on a topic, motivating students to prepare for class.
- 3). Offer assistance. This step alone can make a huge impact on a college student who is struggling academically. Giving him a sense of not being alone can make all the difference in the world. Professors can meet with students who are having obvious difficulties and suggest tutoring and parents can work with their child, helping him study or get organized. Anything will help as long as it makes the student feel that someone cares about his difficulties and is there to help.
- 4). Suggest a study group. These groups consist of varying amounts of students and can be teacher-led or not. They consist of students who are either struggling or just prefer the support of others. Study groups are a good way for struggling students to identify with others and feel connected to the class.
