Preparing Your Car for the Colder Weather

We've already had our first snow of the season and we are less than a month away from the official start of winter. As a Long Island Insurance Executive, Gregg S. Marcus wants to make you're your car is prepared for this change in weather. The colder temperatures can be rough on any automobile, although newer models are designed to withstand the colder weather. Here are some tips to help keep your car in the best shape for the winter months ahead:
Check the oil
When the outside temperature drops, it will also affect the internal temperature of the car's engine. If you live where temperatures can go below freezing you should switch to a thinner less viscous oil then you use during the summer months. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific information for your particular car.
Check the battery
A car battery can die at any time without notice. Exceptionally cold temperatures can reduce a car battery's life by up to 50 percent. Have your battery tested by a mechanic before the colder weather sets in, especially if you have an older car.
Check the engine coolant
A car's coolant system keeps your engine from overheating and is also responsible for protecting it against corrosion. Make sure you use coolant that has the correct mix of anti-freeze and water. Purchase a tester at your local auto parts store.
Inspect your windshield wiper blades and wiper fluid
Salt buildup on your windshield can be a dangerous hazard while driving in winter weather. Change your existing blades to winter weather blades and refill your wiper fluid reservoir to be sure you are prepared for the next big storm.
Check tire pressure and invest in snow tires
A properly inflated tire will allow for better traction in wet, snowy conditions so it is important to check the tire pressure often in the winter. If you live in an area that gets a lot of snowfall, you may consider investing in snow tires. They will do a much better job in the snow than all-weather tires.
Keep an emergency kit in your car
There are a few basic items that you should always have in your car in case of an emergency:

  • A flashlight, flares and first aid kit

  • A blanket, warm clothes and gloves

  • A radio

  • A bag of abrasive material like sand or kitty litter for when you get stuck

  • Extra windshield washer fluid

  • A brush or ice scraper

  • Extra coolant

When you plan ahead for the colder months, you will keep your car, yourself and your passengers safe! Are you paying too much for car insurance?
