More than 30 showrooms lie in wait in Michigan’s premier design showcase: The Michigan Design Center. The showrooms bring together top names in furniture, fabrics, flooring, wallcoverings, tile, rugs, lighting, kitchens, cabinetry, artwork, accessories, and more in this 215,000 square foot facility.
MDC is open to all but is not a retail center so each showroom sets its own operating policies. Many showrooms have designers on staff to assist you with planning and design and MDC has designers on-site for design support as well.
The center’s website is loaded with valuable design details, including designer tips that have included ideas for including outdoor fabrics in interior plans, guidelines for hanging art and accessories, small space solutions, and even recipes for hosting a “fete with friends,” and an Inspiration Gallery that includes more than 1,600 rooms created by local designers and MDC showrooms and manufacturers, as well as monthly featured designer rooms.
MDC also offers an interesting and in-depth way in which to get to know its designers, showrooms and overall contributors via @home magazine. Here, the design center’s players tell their own stories – from time-honored family traditions to tips for decorating and entertaining. A digital version of the magazine is available through the MDC website.
The design center also packs its calendar with events, lectures and various design series and competitions, like student career days, the Detroit Home Design Awards, and the March Madness event that puts 12 designers in six showrooms in head-to-head competition to create their own interpretations of a theme starting with three similar basic furnishings.
