How to Return a Social Security Check Upon Death

    • 1). Call the Social Security Administration promptly and notify them of the recipient's death. Provide the deceased's name and Social Security number.

    • 2). With direct deposit of Social Security checks, call the decedent's bank or other financial institution and notify them of the person's death. Ask that any money the decedent receives "for the month of death and later be returned to Social Security as soon as possible," according to Social Security Online.

    • 3). Return any Social Security checks the decedent receives "for the month in which the beneficiary died or thereafter" to the local Social Security office. Do not cash any checks.
