Hair Transplant New York - How Hair Transplants Are Performed

More hair restoration treatments are performed in the United States than anywhere else in the world, with more than 100,000 performed in 2010, according to the International Society for Hair Restoration.  The prevalence of this procedure means that, at some point, many Americans will at least consider having this work done.  However, many people don't even fully understand how it is done.  Here's a primer on how receiving a hair transplant in New York would work.

The transplant procedure involves taking hairs from the back of the head, which are resistant to the hormone that causes balding, and transplanting them on the top of the head where hair is needed.  The procedure typically takes half a day, and may involve between 1,500 and, in extreme cases, 3,000 hair follicle grafts.  Usually, patients receive local anesthesia, so the procedure shouldn't be especially uncomfortable.  Besides numbness or soreness that will linger for about a week, patients can expect to feel fully recovered a day or two after receiving their hair transplant in New York.

The procedure begins with the hairs that will be transplanted being trimmed.  After the local anesthetic is applied, the surgeon can collect the skin tissue that the transplant hair follicles are rooted in, suture the area, and arrange the remaining hair to conceal the suturing.  Next, the excess fiber and tissue are removed from the skin tissue and hair that have been collected; then, the hair follicles are prepared into grafts, which are placed in small cuts that have been made in the bald area.  The incisions are carefully but randomly made to convincingly mimic the way that hair naturally grows.

The number of hair grafts is the factor that varies most between hair graft surgeries.  The exact length of the procedure and the pricing can depend on the number of hair grafts.  Surprisingly, many surgeons actually offer a discount for a larger number of grafts.  The size of the bald area will affect how many grafts you need; so can the thickness and appearance of your hair.  People with finer or lighter hair will typically require more grafts during their hair transplant in New York to achieve the same end appearance as someone with thicker hair.

Although the procedure may sound a little unappealing, it isn't painful, and the results are undeniably worthwhile.  The transplanted hairs continue to maintain their resistance to balding, and if placed carefully, they can really give the illusion of a full head of hair.  As long as you take the time to find a skilled surgeon to perform the procedure, it's highly doubtful that you will regret having a hair transplant in New York.
