How to Put a Spotlight on Artwork

    • 1). Position the light about three to five feet away from the artwork. The light needs to be far enough to illuminate it, but close enough that people won't walk between the light and the piece. If they do, the artwork will be placed in shadow.

    • 2). Angle the light, so it either shines upward or downward at the piece, depending on the height of the artwork and the size of the light. It should be angled 30 degrees to the side of the piece as well, to help prevent glare.

    • 3). Choose a bulb that adequately illuminates your work. There is no right or wrong answer here, because a light that is too bright can cause your work to look washed out -- while a light that is too dim will keep elements of your work hidden. The choice of bulb is artistic in nature and should be made by the artist. Spotlights are often three times as bright as the ambient lighting in the room.
