Definition:
The lacerna was a man's woolen cape worn over the tunica, toga, or by soldiers. It was open in front and fastened on the shoulder. The lacerna was lighter than the sagum and paludamentum. The lacerna could have a hood (cucullus). It is hard to distinguish the lacerna in pictures and sculpture from the military cloaks, but it had become quite popular by imperial times. It could be expensive.
