Tips to Relieve Heartburn in Pregnancy

Anyone who has had a child will remember how uncomfortable the heartburn is.  Apparently heartburn is one of most commonly reported complaint for pregnant women.  This is true as a friend of mine just asked if I knew or remembered any strategies for easing heartburn.  It was a long time ago when I gave birth so I thought I would research and write this article.

Studies have shown that heartburn is caused by the elevated levels of the hormone progesterone along with the increased intra-abdominal pressures caused by the enlarging uterus lowers the  esophageal sphincter pressure. This in simple terms means the valve between the stomach and the food pipe (esophagus) are unable to prevent the stomach acids from passing back into the esophagus causing the irritation.

The best way to deal with this irritation is by preventing it in the first place.  This can be done by some simple changes.  Not always popular but you should try to avoid eating greasy or spicy food and avoid eating late at night. Chocolate, tomato sauces, caffeine and carbonated drinks should also be avoided.  Try eating smaller meals in general.  Eat little and often, and never lie down after eating, wait at least 3 hours before going to bed. In bed raising the head a little with pillows can be helpful.

Smoking and alcohol isn't advised in pregnancy for obvious reasons, but many do.  Abstinence from alcohol and tobacco will help heartburn and stop your baby having exposure to potentially harmful substances.

Generally with these simple lifestyle changes your symptoms should improve.  If this isn't enough you should consult with your doctor for advice on medication.  You must always consult with a doctor before taking any medication for any condition when you are pregnant.  Some medicine can be harmful to your unborn child so always consult with your GP first.

Research has shown that there are certain drugs that are considered safe for use in pregnancy and others which should be avoided.  One of the most common over the counter medicines available for heartburn is Antacids.  They can contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium and are generally considered safe and effective in treating heartburn during pregnancy.  Magnesium-containing antacids should be avoided during the last part of your pregnancy because they could interfere with contractions during childbirth.  Also sodium bicarbonate which can cause metabolic alkalosis and increase the potential of fluid overload in both the foetus and mother can be found in some Antacids. There are many types which why it is best to ask your Doctor first.

Natural remedies should always be tried first and if you can honestly say you have tried everything and your heartburn is still causing you grief, the only option is to see your Doctor.  Also remember  time flies, before you know it you will be giving birth and all of the complaints you had when you were pregnant will soon be faded memory, just like mine.
