There are certain definitions and industry related terms that the young sales professional should learn prior to graduating college.
Even though they are not difficult concepts not using them in an interview can be a disadvantage to the younger sales job seeker because, inevitably the low bar of understanding of these terms leads most college grads utilizing the terminology throughout their entry-level interviews.
First and foremost, the younger sales job seeker needs to get a solid grasp on what consultative selling is and the misconceptions that people have regarding the term and the poor implementation of its core methodologies throughout most sales careers, let alone entry-level sales interviews.
Consultative selling, in my opinion is more of a hell rather than a continually ask.
Before a salesperson goes into a meeting, they should be prepared with enough information on the target client that mundane, cookie-cutter questions be asked simply for the sake of asking questions.
Decision-makers at companies are very, very easy and even more stressed.
Therefore, they don't want to be asked questions simply for the sake of being asked questions.
In less you are a sales engineer, most of the information that you are going to need to sell your product or service is right there on the web, gratis.
As a business owner and decision-maker, when I go to a vendor, I don't want them to waste my time.
The best way that they can close the deal with me is to show me nothing short of absolute competence.
As as an aspiring sales professional, understand that everybody in sales is going to use the term "Consultative-selling.
" These individuals are going to do so during interviews they do so during their presentations and internal training and they do so at trade events simply for the reason that the two words have come to mean "Good salesmanship.
" Despite this, the last thing that you want to do as a sales job seeker, especially entry-level is tell somebody that they have a misconception regarding the most basic phrasing around.
However take this first definition, put it in the back of your brain, and within six months into your sales career, this bit of knowledge will help you find the true definition of "Consultative selling.
