- 1). Check the docking station of your laptop or desktop computer to find out what kind of port your PC uses. Computers come with a VGA port, a DVI port, or both. If you are unsure whether your computer's port is VGA or DVI, consult your computer manual or ask your computer's manufacturer.
- 2). Review your HDTV's manual to find out whether your TV uses VGA, DVI or HDMI. If your HDTV uses HDMI, you will need to use a HDMI to DVI cord. If your HDTV uses DVI, but your computer comes installed with only a VGA port, you will need to use a DVI to VGA converter.
- 3). Purchase the appropriate cable: an HDMI to DVI cable, a DVI cable, or a VGA cable. HDMI and DVI cables are rather expensive, whereas VGA cables are usually priced affordably.
- 4). Power off the TV. Attach one end of the cable to the HDTV and the other end to the computer.
- 5). Power on the TV. To activate the HDTV display, press "Fn" and "F12," or "Fn" and "F8," simultaneously. If the computer's display does not appear, check your PC's manual to find out what keys to press in order to activate TV output display.
- 6). Change your computer's display settings until you find a resolution you are comfortable with. Go to "Start," then "Control Panel." If you have Windows Vista, double-click "Personalization," then "Display Settings." If you have XP, double-click "Display," then click the "Settings" tab.
- 7). Cycle through different resolutions available and click "Apply," one by one, to test each display setting. Keep in mind that some HDTVs may not be able to support very high resolutions. Once you find a resolution you like, click "OK."
