Public service agencies are eligible to apply for most grants, whether the grants originate at the federal, state or private foundation level. Tens of thousands of grants are available. Locating grants is easy but research is required to find grants that are obtainable and appropriate for a particular agency. To receive grant funding, agencies must prove they have the capacity to implement the grant project, the grant matches the agency's mission and the agency can deliver the results the funder is seeking. - The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance contains more than 2,000 grant opportunities to research. These grants originate from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Interior, Education and Justice. Federal grants are seldom awarded directly to agencies, but rather are usually passed through the state agency with the same name.
- Many larger corporations have community giving programs. Corporations concentrate their awards where they have either a company headquarters or where they operate stores. Research any corporations that are operating locally and determine if they have a community giving program. These awards tend to be smaller than government grants but they are easier to obtain.
- The Foundation Center maintains a current list of requests for proposals (RFPs) in many different categories. A request for proposal is a notification that a foundation is currently accepting grant applications. It is important to narrow the search for foundation funding since some only fund specific organizations and some are not currently accepting applications.
