How to Replace Electric Guitar Strings

    • 1). Unwind the old guitar string by turning the tuning peg counterclockwise. When it is free of the tuning peg, push the string through the back of the bridge (for most Gibson-style guitars) or the back of the whole guitar (for most Fender-style guitars). Dispose of the string.

    • 2). Pull the plain end of the new string through the bridge or the back of the guitar toward the neck. The other end of the string should have a ball attached to it; pull the string through until the ball stops it from being pulled any farther.

    • 3). Pull the string taut toward its respective tuning peg, ensuring that it falls into the correct divot in the nut.

    • 4). Loop the string around the tuning peg a few times, insert the end through the hole in the tuning peg until it comes out the other side, then pull it the rest of the way through. When it comes through the other side, it should be over the looped part of the string so it prevents the loops from slipping up and over the top of the tuning peg.

    • 5). Turn the tuning peg clockwise to tighten the string until it no longer buzzes against the frets when plucked. Cut off the excess string if desired.

    • 6). Tune the strings once they have all been replaced. Once the strings are tuned, stretch them by performing bends on each string. This should cause them to go out of tune rather quickly, so tune them again, and repeat this process until they can hold their tuning.
