- 1). Check the plug where your microphone connects to the computer. Ensure it is in the correct port and plugged in completely. Sometimes it can appear to be plugged in but isn't secure and results in crackling or it not working at all.
- 2). Right-click the "Volume" icon in your taskbar, and select "Recording Devices." Choose the microphone that belongs to your device and click "Set Default" to use it for Vent. Select "Properties," then click the "Levels" tab and slide the slider to the right to increase the microphone volume.
- 3). Use a headset, instead of speakers, to listen to your game's sounds. The speakers can create static or an echo to other players, because your microphone picks up other sounds besides your voice.
- 4). Press down the proper key when trying to talk. In Ventrilo, you need to press a specified key to enable the microphone by default so it's not on constantly and allows you to silence it when you don't have anything to say. Select which key to use through the "Options" menu in Ventrilo.
- 5). Update the drivers on your computer. This is especially true when using a USB headset or microphone. Drivers are available in most cases by going to the manufacturer's website.
- 6). Try another microphone if possible. If your microphone or the wire connecting it to the computer is damaged, it may not work at all or work with significant quality issues.
