Holistic Uses of Tuning Forks

    Sound Waves

    • Sound is simply a vibration moving through the air. Noise is random sound waves, while a tone is organized sound waves. For example, a musical instrument produces organized sound waves with a specific number of vibrations per second known as the frequency. Sound waves have different shapes created by the level of frequency.

A tuning fork is simply a two-pronged device for producing a specific pitch when struck. A tuning fork can be calibrated to a specific pitch, such as the planetary frequency or the moons, and is believed to heal at these vibrations.

    Sound Healing

    • Many holistic practitioners believe that there is a direct link between sound and healing. They believe the subtle energy fields of the body can become disharmonious, and therefore that harmonious sounds can reset the natural energy of the body.

    History

    • Throughout history there has been a belief that sound can transform or heal a person. Chants, mantras and ancient instruments such as the didgeridoo, Tibetan bowls, bells, drums and rattles were used for this practice.

According to Johnathan Goldman's article "Healing Sounds," organs, bones, tissue and other body parts produce frequencies. When a part of the body is out of balance, it vibrates differently or out of sync with the rest of the body. Goldman believes that if the correct vibratory resonance is reached by correcting the frequency, health is restored.

Goldman also refers to the work of Dr. Hans Jenny. Jenny was a medical doctor and scientist who experimented by photographing everyday objects like liquids or plastics as they were subjected to sound frequencies. The pictures showed both organic and geometric-type forms created due to the vibrations the objects were exposed to.

    Healing Instrument

    • Tuning forks are an important method of harmonic (sound) healing. They are noninvasive, somewhat like acupuncture. There are two primary ways turning forks are used. Working with acupressure points, the sound wave from the tuning fork travels via the meridian system of the body aligning the body's frequencies. When placed near the ear, the tuning fork's vibration sends sound vibrations into the body and balances both the body's subtle energy and physical body.

    Holistic Uses

    • Luminanti, a healing center, promotes using turning forks in addition to the methods above for various ways to promote healing. Examples include using tuning forks with a crystal directed toward the body, for energizing water and flower essences, creating a frequency in a room or working with auras to create a healing frequency. As the entire procedure is noninvasive and soothing, trying different approaches to using a tuning fork may produce surprising results.
