Moped: Electric Vs. Gas Powered

    Identification

    • The smallest model mopeds come with pedals such as power-assisted bicycles. These are not meant for highways yet do not require regular vehicle registration or insurance coverage. They could be perfect alternatives for traveling shorter distances without the hassles of registration or special endorsement requirements for anything with an engine size over 50cc. The larger model mopeds such as scooters do require registration, and insurance requirements will vary. The larger models have a step-through frame with a platform to place your feet on.

    Electric

    • Electric mopeds run off battery power and not gas. There is no oil to change and no transmission to maintain. You simply plug it into a electrical socket when not in use. The miles you get per charge vary per model: the bigger models that run off lithium batteries will last around 50 miles per charge going no more than 30 mph; models that that don't come with lithium batteries cannot be plugged in at will but instead will develop a memory life if charged at random.

    Gas

    • Gas mopeds run off gas and get anywhere from 50 to 200 miles to the gallon, depending on the type of moped. The ones that get around 200 mpg are the mopeds that are gas-assisted bicycles. The larger the engine (typically scooters), the less gas mileage it gets. The larger models can sometimes handle highway speeds, but unless they're customized specifically for this purpose, they are not fit for highway use. The larger ones are more easily seen in traffic, and often allow two riders.

    Cost

    • Mopeds cost less than motorcycles, making them an attractive option for commuting and casual travel. Gas-powered mopeds cost less than electric mopeds and run anywhere from $800 to $1,000, depending on the model. The faster you want it to go, the more it will cost. Electric mopeds cost more, ranging from roughly $2,000 to $5,000, on average. It costs more upfront since you aren't paying for the cost of gas. Electricity rates vary from location to location, but overall, most electric moped owners still find the cost of charging the moped cheaper than purchasing gas, especially if they are able to plug it in at the employer's or where they are running their errands.

    Effects

    • Using a moped versus an automobile reduces the amount of pollution being added the air, saves money and offers flexibility with parking on campuses and busy city streets. Some opt for mopeds over motorcycles to satisfy the need to ride on two wheels at an overall cheaper cost. Don't expect a moped to perform well on steep hills, unless it's a larger, more powerful model.
