The ultimate of high end guitars, the PRS Dragon is an iconic legend among circles of professional players around the world. Consider yourself lucky if you can ever find one [http://www.insidermusicreview.com], and even more so if you actually sit down and play the thing. The Dragon is incredible in terms of tone, design, constructionâ• ¦pretty much any factor upon which you could compare a guitar this thing stands head and feet above the rest.
First and foremost, I want to be transparent is saying I do not actually own a Dragon myself. I have played three in my life, and being a PRS snob I wanted to at least get one hub up for my favorite guitar ever.
Tone and Sound Quality ' A Discussion of the PRS Dragon Pickups
If you're looking for one of the best all around tones, the Dragon pickups might be the secret gem you have been seeking. While not the greatest for some specific styles like say metal, the Dragon can deliver a spectrum of tones from bright sustained jazz to more fuzz or blues styles.
These Dragon pickups usually comes setup on a PRS Custom or PRS Standard, but I have also noticed them on other models as well. The most common model of pickup that you will see is the PRS Dragon II. They retail for about $200-$300 USD, and are a worthwhile investment no matter what your setup. I do recommend marrying the pickups to a quality instrument, but the discussion of guitar construction is another article altogether.
The Design of the Dragon
When considering the actual PRS Dragon guitar, the main premium component for which you are paying is the design. Yes, the electronics, wood and everything else are supreme (more to come on that), but really the iconic design is what stands apart with the Dragon.
The more recent 25th Anniversary model is probably my favorite, as some of the older lines were a bit extravagant. They have a blue sapphire display on the PRS website now that just makes me drool. Check it out here for a peak - http://www.prsguitars.com/25thdragon/index.php
The Dream Purchase
I really can't lie, if I was filthy rich the first thing I would buy is a PRS Dragon. These guitars are just incredible, and would be the pinnacle to my guitar collection. One can dream I suppose.
If you are seriously in the market for a Dragon, then I would highly advise that you speak with a pro guitar tech before you finally make the purchase. Sometimes they will even inspect the instrument for a small fee, which is easily worth it if your going to drop that kind of money.
In conclusion, I will leave you with a clip from one of my favorite movies of all-time. If you look closely, you just might spot a Dragon ï• •
