A hunter's nose is the most important tool for him in hunting.
Hunters use it to track down their prey such as rabbits.
We are well aware that dogs have a very keen sense of smell.
Some were even bred for it.
Some dogs, like the German Shepherd are now being used by the police to sniff out guns or even illegal drugs.
But how keen are their senses, especially their sense of smell? We all notice that our dog's nose is a little wet or humid.
The reason behind it is that the moisture traps the molecules from the environment.
They got the molecules from almost everything that a dog's nose can go into.
That is why dogs like to lick their noses that much.
The dog's nose has also a lot of mucous inside to help it get moist.
The dog's nasal membrane is so powerful and complex that it is the size of a handkerchief if you actually spread it out.
Our nasal membrane is as small as a postage stamp if compared to theirs.
That is just a comparison to easily explain how complex their nasal membrane is.
The olfactory bulb then sends the information to the dog's brain.
Even their olfactory bulb is way larger than ours although our brain is more powerful than theirs.
That is because their ancestors where good hunters and their keen sense of smell were passed down from generations to generations.
Dogs, as we all know, have descended from great hunting animals called wolves.
That is why their noses are keen to smelling.
They use their prey's smell to track them down.
Humans discovered their keen sense of smell that is why they are now utilizing it for their own benefits.
