- 1). Create a mixture of 1 tablespoon mild hand soap and 2 cups warm water. Do not use soap that contains phosphates, dyes or perfumes.
- 2). Wet a soft-bristled toothbrush in the soapy mixture and gently work it into the ruler’s surface. Clean 1/4 of the ruler at a time, wiping down the wet surface with a microfiber cloth to quickly remove the liquid.
- 3). Allow the ruler to dry completely and remove any difficult stains or haze with 0000 steel wool. Gently rub the steel wool with the wood’s grain to remove stains and haze without scratching the finish.
- 4). Examine the wood ruler. If the ruler is clean, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If there are difficult stains remaining, move to the next step.
- 5). Soak a cotton ball with denatured alcohol. Gently spot-clean the ruler with the alcohol. Rinse the ruler with plain water and dry it with a microfiber cloth.
- 6). Allow the ruler to air dry completely before storing it in a cool, dry place. Wrap the ruler in acid-free paper, velvet or cotton to prevent scratches or damage.
