Pool Filter Problems

    Sand Pool Filters

    • The sand in a sand filter is ground very finely and does not clog any water on its own. However, if minerals like calcium or chlorine sediments deposit on the filters, it could cause the filter to clog and the pressure of the water to build up steadily. To get rid of this problem, it is important to backwash the sand regularly. The filter sand should also be changed every 4 to 5 years.

    Short Cycle Sand Filter

    • This problem is usually caused when there is improper backwashing of the filter. The filter valve has a sight glass through which you can see the clarity of the water that passes through the filter. After you have backwashed the filter or changed the sand, always see that the water running through the filter is clear. Clear water should run through the filter for at least two minutes if the filter is completely clean.

    Filter is Not Filtering Sand

    • This occurs when the sand being used in the filter has been ground too small. Ideally, the sand is ground to a size where it can allow only water to pass through. The sand used for a pool filter is usually 45 to 55 mm pool sand or #20 Silica. Both of these can be found at pool merchandise dealers. Sometimes, sand may also be left unfiltered if the swimming pool pump is too big for the filter.

    Cartridge Filter Not Clearing Algae

    • Cartridge filter problems are mostly caused due to elements which have been used beyond their limit, or by cartridges which have become completely clogged and dirty. The elements should be cleaned regularly and chlorine tablets should be added to the pool from time to time. If the elements in the cartridges are worn out or torn, replace them.

    Pool Filter is Noisy

    • The most likely cause of this is an oversized pump. If the pump is oversized, there is excessive flow of water through the filter and it makes a lot of noise. This can be remedied by checking the return inlets of the pool and installing smaller fittings. The impeller size of the pump could also be changed to a smaller one.
