How to Kill Staph in a Hot Tub

    • 1). Select a product from the list provided by the Environmental Protection Agency. Note that the products with one asterisk or no asterisks on the list are approved staph disinfectants. The EPA has approved products with bleach or sodium hypochlorite, citric acid, hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol and ammonium chloride. Some of the approved disinfectants have more than one of these products.

    • 2). Review the information on the label for cleaning instructions. Some disinfectants recommend wetting or washing the hot tub surface before application. Dilute the disinfectant if the instructions recommend adding water.

    • 3). Wear protective equipment and ventilate the area as recommended by the manufacturer of the disinfectant. You may need gloves or a mask.

    • 4). Apply the disinfectant as recommended on the label to all areas of the hot tub that come in contact with the body. Leave the disinfectant on the surface for the length of time recommended on the container.

    • 5). Rinse the hot tub surface to remove traces of the disinfectant. Allow the hot tub surface to dry before use.
