How to Find a Court Appearance for an Inmate

    • 1). Call the jail or, if your jurisdiction has a website, go online. See if there is an inmate search feature. If there is, enter the required information and see what comes back. If the court date is there, you're done. If not, go to the next step.

    • 2). Call the local criminal courts building. When looking up the number in the phone book or online, look for a listing for a court clerk's office or court records office. Typically, they have court appearance information. If they can give you the date, you're done. If not, go to the next step.

    • 3). Call the prosecutor's office, the public defender's office, or both. You should be able to find a listing online or in the phone book. Provide the information you have on the inmate and ask whether they know the court appearance information. If they tell you they are not the proper people to talk to, ask them who the proper person is and get that person's contact information.

    • 4). Your last option is to visit the jail in person. The inmate should know when his next court date is.
