- 1). Find subjects you're passionate about. Tutoring can mean a lot of different things. Tutoring can mean teaching elementary and high school students basic subjects such as science, math and English, or it can go beyond that to areas such as creative writing, a foreign language or playing a musical instrument. The more passion you have for what you are teaching, the more likely you will find success.
- 2). Write a formal business plan. This includes describing the types of tutoring services you will offer. Determine how you will find paying customers. For example, if you're focused on tutoring young students, you may be able to work through schools or local PTA groups. Your business plan should also include who will be tutoring, such as yourself or contracted employees; how much profit you want to make; and how you will present your business -- serious and academic-based or fun and entertaining.
- 3). Set your prices. Once you know what services you will offer and how much you want to earn, you need an hourly rate for tutoring services. Most large tutoring companies charge between $40 and $75 an hour. If your tutoring business offers one-on-one services, then you can feel confident charging on the upper end. If you're hiring contracted workers, decide what they should be paid per hour. This amount can depend on your area, the experience and education level of the tutors and how much you want to get paid yourself.
- 4). Make your business official. You need to register your business through your local or state government. You might also need a license or permits. Check with your state, county or city government office that deals with licensing small businesses. Other things that make a business official are opening a business bank account, printing business cards, creating a service and price sheet for clients, writing a client contract and posting a website.
- 5). Advertise your business. To get paid, you need clients to tutor. Take out ads in your local paper. Reach out to organizations that serve your target market so they're aware of your services, and tell everyone you know about your tutoring business.
