- Decide the objective of each area before planting. Plants may be used as privacy screens, as a cover to a defect in an area of the grounds or a structure, to provide shade or as a windbreak. Plants may also be used to fill the simple need for a splash of color.
- Consider the maintenance needed before choosing the landscape plant. Some types will need pruning, weeding or additional water. Choose and plant accordingly.
- The mature size of the planting must be taken into consideration to prevent a view or sunlight from being blocked and to prevent the encroachment of the landscape plant into other areas.
- Some landscape plants can provide color throughout the year, while others cannot survive a harsh winter. Choose plants that give the best options for each season of the year.
