- 1). Compare the types of systems. Both wired and wireless invisible fences exist. The type of system determines the installation required. Wired systems require professional installation or hours of work to dig the trenches and run the wires around the desired perimeter. Wireless systems need only to be mounted and turned on. Wireless systems are also portable.
- 2). Compare the maximum coverage radius of each system. Higher-end wired systems can support a larger area than entry-level systems or the wireless version. Determine the amount of space you need your system to enclose and look for a system that meets that requirement.
- 3). Compare the flexibility of the systems. Most systems support the use of multiple collars at once. However, additional flexibility features must be considered. The ability to adjust the activation distance -- how far from the perimeter the dog has to be to hear a warning tone -- is one example. Another important feature is the ability to use a stronger collar for especially stubborn pets. The number of correction levels is another consideration to keep in mind.
- 4). Investigate the training programs included with the system. Some brands include training videos and materials with the purchase of the system. Proper training is the key to the effectiveness of the invisible fence. Most systems include a set of training flags to aid in the process.
- 5). Compare the price points and warranty options. Invisible fences range from a few hundred dollars to thousands depending on the specifications and installation requirements. All warranty options include 12 months or more of coverage, but some may include exclusion clauses that make them less attractive.
