Although it may only seem as though there is one way to get to Africa to go on a safari of a lifetime, and to a certain extent you would be right. However more and more people are now becoming more adventurous and seeking new and exhilarating ways to travel the African continent. Generally most people will fly to Africa directly from Europe, Australia and even the USA. Almost all of these flights are long haul with Australia being perhaps the longest of all the flights roughly around 15 hours from Sydney to Johannesburg. For most economy class is all that is in their price bracket but for some, something a little more luxurious is on the cards, in first class. First class doesn't have to be out of most people's reach however; as if you book your flights well in advance sometimes you are able to get an upgrade for free.
Once you've landed in Africa and become acquainted with your surroundings there are several ways you are able to get to your safari destination. Many people choose to take an internal flight and land on a private airstrip within the reserve. Others choose to take an internal flight to a regional airport in close proximity to the safari park. For the more adventurous amongst you there is the possibility of hiring a car and exploring a bit more of the country on your way to your final destination. This is perhaps the most fascinating way to see Africa, the local people, the diverse landscape and a great way to eat the local food. By integrating yourself like this into the local way of life you are able to get a more all-round experience rather than just flying in and out of the safari park and not seeing what's on offer in the surrounding areas.
If you are short on time but not short of a bit of cash then the best way to see as much as possible in the shortest amount of time would be to fly between destinations, which gives you a sense of the scale of the country and a chance to see a variety of different animals in a vast array of different environments.
If time is not an issue but money is and you are looking to travel Africa on more of a shoestring budget then local buses or renting a car with a few fellow travelers is the way to go. Although much more time consuming and a little more frustrating you will appreciate this experience in the long run... you may never get the opportunity to participate on a road trip through Africa again.
