The Road Less Traveled, an organization that offers unique adventure experiences for youth and their families, also offers a "Spirit of the West" experience in South Dakota.
This camp offers environmental conservation experience, focusing on mustangs, as well as exploration, rock climbing and cultural experience.
Spirit of the West is a 19-day adventure for ages 14-18 running from July 5 - July 23, 2010. Cost is $4,795 and includes all necessary camping gear as well as cooking equipment, helmets, compasses and maps as well as transportation between sites. Founded in 1951, this camp offers experiences in canoeing and hiking as well as living and working together in the north woods of Minnesota.
This boys-only camp for ages 9-18 runs from July through August. The 4-week camp costs $3,200, while the 8-week camp costs $6,400.
Tuition includes meals and lodging as well as some basic gear, and a lot of adventure. Campers are responsible for clothing, shoes and boots, swimming gear, sleeping bag as well as bedding for the cabins. Wander Wisconsin, based in Madison, is an organization offering camps for ages 8-16. Campers can sign up for day trips, weekend or weeklong camping adventures.
Activities include backpacking, camping, canoeing and kayaking as well as leadership training, outdoor skills, photography and many other opportunities for both fun and learning experiences.
The organization offers Travel Clubs for ages 8-13, Kid Campouts for ages 8-11, Youth Treks for ages 11-13, as well as Teen Adventures for ages 13-16. All programs are coed and run June through August, lasting 5 or 6 days, depending on the club.
