How to Stop Unwanted Barking For Dogs

    • 1). Fill an old soda can with 8 to 10 pennies. Put masking tape over the hole. Every time your dog barks when you don't want him to shake the can and say "No!, firmly. When he stops give him a pet on the head and say "good boy/girl". Be sure to wash and dry your can before using.

    • 2). Fill a spray bottle with plain water. When your dog barks, spray him in the face and say "No!". Give a treat, a pet on the head and a "good boy/girl" when he stops.

    • 3). Buy an ultrasonic anti-barking device or collar. As soon as your dog barks the device will emit a high pitched sound that startles your dog. They soon learn to associate the baring with the unwanted sound. Humans do not hear the sound. These are available online and in pet stores.

    • 4). Buy a citronella collar. The collar will sense the barking and give a mist of citronella. Dogs do not like the smell of citronella and will associate the unwanted scent with barking. Citronella collars are available online and in pet stores.

    • 5). Use a shock collar. The collar will vibrate when the dog barks. The dog will stop barking because they do not like the vibration. Don't worry it does not shock in the hurting sense, shocking as in the sense of scaring or startling.

    • 6). Use a leash. Keep your dog on a leash at all times in the house or outside of the house. When your dog barks, give a quick correction tug to the side and firmly say "no". This is very, very time intensive, but will work with patience and persistence.
