Distemper is a viral disease that is actually more common in puppies as when dogs become older they have normally developed an immunity to the disease.
The condition is classified as a Morbillivirus and is quite similar to the virus Measles in humans.
The virus will normally start in the Lymph Nodes and will the pass through the blood stream (this will normally occur two to three days after infection.
Primary and the secondary fevers will then take place before the virus starts to attack the brain and spinal chord.
Early Symptoms
- A runny nose and discharge may be present in the condition
- Expect your dog to have discharge running from the eyes
- An increased temperature is also a symptom
- Vomiting is quite common alongside bouts of diarrhea
- Your dog may also start to cough excessively
- The foot pads may also become thicker and harder
- Your pooch may even develop pneumonia
- Canine seizures may occur when your dog has developed later neurological problems
- The jaws may start to snap involuntarily
- Your dog may be uncoordinated with movement
- You may notice that your dog appears weak
- Muscle tremors are another symptom of the disease
If the distemper symptomsdo start to develop then your vet may prescribe antibiotics to alleviate any cold symptoms or fever.
