How to Use Google Encrypted Search from the Firefox Search Bar

In May 2010, Google introduced the ability to use encrypted search using https://encrypted.google.com. Encrypted search helps prevent man-in-the-middle and other forms of eavesdropping attacks that can result in information theft and search engine results manipulation.

Firefox users that use the Firefox search bar will default to the regular, non-encrypted version of Google search. Here's how to add the encrypted Google search to the Firefox search bar.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Download and install the Add to Search Bar add-on for Firefox.
  2. Close Firefox and then reopen it so that the add-on takes effect.
  3. Browse to https://encrypted.google.com
  4. Right-click inside the Google search box and select "Add to Search Bar".
  5. Type in a name, such as Encrypted Google or Google Secure, and click OK.
Note:The name you choose doesn't matter - it's simply to help you identify that this is the encrypted version of Google.
  6. That's it. You're done. Now simply choose the name you entered in step 5 from the list of available search engines for the Firefox search bar. The most recently added search engine will appear at the bottom of the list. You can rearrange the order of the search engines by selecting "Manage Search Engines" from the search engine drop down menu.
