Photos of the Baths at Pompeii

The following photographs were taken of the remains of baths at Pompeii. The indentations in the wall were storage lockers.

While people bathed they stored their possessions in such nooks, but not without risk.

Theft was a common problem at the baths, but not all theft was deliberate.

A story told the photographer while visiting the site is that to prevent accidental (mistaking someone else's toga for one's own) theft, the lockers were marked. However, since the population was largely illiterate, words or numbers wouldn't do. Instead pictures of sexual positions distinguished one locker from the next.
