Popular Symbols on Jewish Jewelry

There are several Jewish symbols which can commonly be found on popular jewelry.
This article is about to cover those who are common to the Jewish religion so that one may find them available on the market today.
  • "Chai" Jewelry: You may see "Chai" jewelry advertised and be confused as to what this means so let us explain.
Chai in Hebrew means "living" and the Hebrew word is made up of two Hebrew letters, "Chet" and "Yud".
Hebrew letters have numerical values and the numerical value of the word Chai is eighteen.
Therefore, many Jewish people have the custom of giving charity or gift money in multiples of eighteen, symbolizing the wish for life.
Some will say that the word Chai represents G-d, as a Living G-d, while others say that it represents Judaism's focus on the importance of life.
The Torah, the book by which Jewish people lead their lives is often referred to as "Torah Chayim" or "the Torah of Living", reflecting the fact that G-d wants the Jewish people to live by His book.
The Jewish people are not commanded to go out and die in the name of their religion, rather to live by it.
A piece of Chai jewelry can be an ideal gift for an eighteenth birthday, or for that matter, any birthday that is a multiple of eighteen!
  • "Hamsa" Jewelry: Hamsa is Arabic for "five".
Hamsa jewelry is an inverted (though not always) hand and has become a very popular piece of Judaica jewelry.
Hamsa jewelry will often have an eye in the center of the palm.
There is actually nothing exclusively Jewish about the Hamsa.
It originates in Arab culture and probably gained popularity through the Jewish people living in Arab countries.
The Hamsa is meant to protect one against the spiritual influence caused by the jealousy of others towards you or your possessions- also referred to as the evil eye.
Some Jewish people, especially those with roots in Arab countries believe in the evil eye and for them a Hamsa is an imperative! For others, it is an intriguing and different piece of jewelry.
"Choshen" Jewelry: Choshen is Hebrew for breastplate and refers to the breastplate worn by the High Priest at the time of his service in the Holy Temple.
The original Choshen was embroidered with golden, blue, purple and scarlet threads.
It was a square shape and its edges were equal to the Biblical measurement "Zereth".
It had twelve different precious stones set into gold settings each engraved with one of the twelve tribes' names.
The "Urim and Tumim" was placed behind the Choshen and the High Priest could thus answer questions through divination, by way of the Choshen.
The beautiful pieces of Choshen jewelry are unique, eye-catching and mystical and perfect for those special people in your life who seem to have everything.
