Year after year, we hear about people making all kinds of New Year's resolutions. Some of the more common ones are to lose weight, quit smoking, or not watch as much TV. Have you made resolutions before that didn't really amount to much? I think we all have. I like to put it in a more positive light. What do I want to do instead of not do?

If you've thought about starting a home business for a long time, and for one reason or another have not done it, consider making it your New Years resolution this year. Before the new year, prepare yourself. Make a list of the obstacles to starting a business.
Some of those might be lack of money to invest, lack of time (too many things to do already), you don't know what kind of business to start, lack of confidence that you can actually do it. Then go through each item on your list, and search out a way to overcome it.

If lack of money to invest is an issue, research home businesses you can start without a big start up cost. Also, how about telecommuting jobs? Normally, all you pay with those is a membership fee to have access to the listing of jobs. It's a good way to bring in some money to keep you going while you are starting up a business.

Feel like you already have too many things on your plate? Take a good, hard look at what you spend your time on. What things can go? If you have older kids, can they do some of those tasks for you? If starting your own home business is a real priority, there is always a way to make it work.

Maybe you have no idea what kind of business to start. Research home business sites where you can find a lot of ideas, and see which ones sound like they might fit your lifestyle, interests, and schedule. There are so many good ideas out there to incorporate into a business.

Do you question your ability to really get a business going and make it work? Seek out a mentor - someone who can help you get up and running, then offer advice along the way. There are some good networks out there, where you can glean from other's experiences and ideas. Join forces with someone who has been at this longer than you, and is willing to help you on your journey. Lack of confidence can merely be due to lack of experience, and finding someone to walk with you through the process can alleviate much of your concern.
