How to Recognize Ulcerative Colitis in Babies

    • 1). Watch the baby for diarrhea, fever, constant crying and abdominal pain that is relentless.

    • 2). Take the baby to the doctor, so she can prescribe a regimen of medication. Watch for relapses. Doctors are loathe to question their own diagnosis. They will keep ordering the same medications. If your baby doesn't respond, get a second opinion. Watch for dehydration.

    • 3). Look for long-term results of ulcerative colitis, which include rectal bleeding, mucous-like stools, weight loss, poor development, or lack of sexual development.

    • 4). Upon correct diagnosis, the baby will be treated with steroids. The illness may be long-term or a one-time situation.

    • 5). Follow the treatment of the child and if no response within a week, call the doctor.
