- 1). Put some thought into what you will wear. Black is classic funeral attire. Make sure you wear business or formal attire and are well groomed.
- 2). You may want to write a card or pick up some flowers as a gift for the family.
- 3). When you enter the funeral location, you will probably be greeted by an usher who will direct you toward the proper room. Pay your respects to the deceased, and the family.
- 4). If you know you will be upset during your participation in the funeral, you may want to have tissues with you. Take several minutes to pay your respects to the deceased.
- 5). Once you have paid your respects, you will greet the family. Greet them with a handshake or a hug, depending on your familiarity with them. Offer condolences and sympathies. Now is the time to hand them your card or flowers if a table has not been provided for such things. Be sensitive in your word choice.
- 6). You will be directed to a chair for a funeral service. Sit quietly until the service is over. Make sure your cell phone, pager or other electronic device will not sound.
- 7). After the service, you may be escorted to the burial site. If so, once you arrive sit or stand quietly. Once the burial is over, stop by the family and offer your condolences once more.
- 8). When you leave the funeral, you may be escorted to the burial site. Once there, stand or sit quietly. Again, this is a time for the utmost respect. Someone is being laid to their final rest.
- 9). When you leave the funeral, give your last condolences, and exit the funeral.
