5 Tips for Working Mothers who Breastfeed

Breastfeeding can be a tricky thing to balance when mommy goes back to work. Here are five helpful tips for working mothers who absolutely want to continue breastfeeding their little one.

Get Committed Now
Most women take three months off for maternity leave which is an excellent time to start preparing. Determine your commitment level now and start thinking about how you will make it work in the future after you return to work. It is not easy to manage work and breastfeeding but once there is a high level of commitment then you will find a way to make it happen. Carefully make a decision and stick to it because you can accomplish anything, right?

Talk with the Boss
One of the best ways to start out successful is to let your boss know what you are doing. Yes it might be uncomfortable telling your supervisor, especially if it is a man, about your breastfeeding adventure but get the confidence and start talking. If your boss does not know what you are doing they might think that you are underperforming at work every time you sneak out for a break. Let them know and discuss the schedule you will need to accomplish this task. Do not be shy about discussing it because once you know your boss is on board it will boost your success.

Forget the Snooze Button
One of the hardest things about a working mother is taking the time to breastfeed in the morning before leaving for work. To keep breastfeeding while still working full time it is important to take every available chance to breastfeed your little one. Instead of hitting the snooze button to get that extra sleep try setting your alarm clock a few minutes earlier and breastfeeding the baby before getting ready for work. Remember the first tip about commitment? You must be committed if you are going to make it work.

Creative Child Care
To reduce the number of bottle feedings ask your employer if you can bring your little one to work. There are many employers who allow this if you speak with them about it. If it does not fly with your boss try looking for child care that is really close to your work. During those breaks and lunch stop by and nurse your little one to reduce bottle feeding and keep your milk supply high. The main goal is to nurse whenever possible and reduce bottle feedings because it keeps the milk supply up. If this is not possible remember to pump as often as you can.

Relax
The best thing that you can do for yourself and your baby is to relax. There might be times where fitting in a breastfeeding or pumping session just isn't possible because of a meeting. There might also be times where you are nervous and drop the milk you just pumped. Things happen and the best thing you can do for yourself is to stay as relaxed and calm as possible.

Breastfeeding can be a wonderful experience and yes there will be challenges but they can be overcome. Do what you can and be comfortable and confident with your decision to breastfeed. You will not be breastfeeding for the rest of your life so make the necessary changes to make it happen now.
