Restrict food and water intake before you take your dog out in the car.
Upon starting to train your dog to go for a drive you must walk the dog to the vehicle then give the dog the command to sit.
Open the door and allow the dog into the back of the car.
If you only have a back seat as in the case of a normal sedan then you may wish to place a blanket down on the seat.
When the dog is sitting quietly shut the door and sit in the driver's side.
If the dog starts to whine or slobber CALM the dog down by stroking the dog and talking quietly.
Once the dog is quiet (End of exercise) let the dog out of the car and then praise the dog.
If the dog remains calm at the beginning of this exercise then start the car, while calmly talking to the dog.
Do not put your voice into a state of excitement because this will excite your dog.
Leave it at that for a day or so, then next time, take the dog to the car.
QUIETLY, place the dog in the car and carry out the same procedure again.
Only this time take the dog for a short drive, reverse out and drive back in again.
When you stop, allow yourself and the dog out...
QUIETLY, then praise if the dog was good.
This is a classic way of desensitising your dog to the vehicle.
Go further and further every couple of days, if the dog gets excited quietly talk to the dog and reassure the animal.
You may think you want to see your dog happy but this will cause anxiety problems in the long term.
So keep the dog calm at all times.
While keeping the trips short you can condition the dog to the car.
Praise the dog once it is out of the car and if it has been good.
Caution: Dogs can get very protective of the car so do not leave the window down too much where the dog can put its teeth through and attempt to attack someone walking past.
If this happens you may want to seek professional advice.
Also never leave a dog confined in a car for long periods especially if the weather conditions are hot.
Dogs can die in a short time if left in cars on a hot day.
Let the dog out for a spell when on long journeys so the dog can drink, exercise and relieve itself.
Important: Only praise good behaviour (like when the dog is quiet) and ignore bad behaviour.
If you reassure the dog whilst this negative behaviour is happening it may make the problem worst, because the dog thinks he is being rewarded for this behaviour.
When you calm the dog evaluate the behaviour and if it gets worse then ignore the dog.
Once calm you can then praise.
Obedience training is always a good start to solving behavioral problems.
Never create an anxiety in your dog by exciting it up to go for a walk or a drive in the car.
There is no need to shake the keys or making the dog silly before his trip.
This is how most of these problems start so if you don't start encouraging this excitement, you may avoid this behaviour altogether.
Also some dogs just drool and slobber and it is the way the dog is, you will have to except this.
There are always plenty of guides to teaching dogs obedience, both in print and online.
But the trick is to find the best ones! That's why we've exhaustively checked out dozens of guides on the Web to find the best dog training guides and sites out there!
