- 1). Choose or create an image. Because bands typically tour either just before or right after releasing a new album, choosing the new album's image is a logical choice. The chosen image should be acceotable to all those touring, including both band and crew members. If a band has a logo that is easily identifiable, that is also another option. For example, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have an eight-armed red cross that is both easily noticed and recognized.
- 2). Print the chosen image. Size does matter, as the tour ID will attach to a keychain. The printout should be large enough that the image is easily identifiable by venue staff. However, the printout should not be so large that it is cumbersome to the band and crew to carry. Try for a printout that is maximum 2 inches wide and 3 inches long.
- 3). Laminate the printout. So many different things can happen to the tag, from spilled drinks to accidental tears or burns. Simply coating the printout with tape or other light covering is not recommended. Find a shop that will cover the printout with some sturdy plastic.
- 4). Cut an appropriately sized hole in the top of the ID tag. Loop the tag through the keychain. If you find that simply looping the printout directly onto the keychain is cumbersome and awkward to carry, try connecting the tag with either a string or a small chain. The hole should be about the same size as the keychain wire, which is usually 1/8 inch, if you're connecting the tag directly to the keychain. Otherwise, the hole should be about 1/4 of an inch.
- 5). Distribute tour IDs already attached to their keychains. Make sure all those touring are aware that they must keep the ID tags with them at all times to enter most venues. Some bands choose to affix names to the tags, but it is not necessary. Putting names on ID tags also makes replacing tags more difficult.
