Should Your London Copywriter Be in London?

Freelance copywriters sometimes have a struggle to stop the wolf battering down the front door.

But if you've got a well-performing website that's nicely optimised, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to attract clients from all over the world. This isn't 1983 and, just because they're based in London, doesn't mean that businesses have to opt for a London copywriter.

In the age of the Internet, with a website optimised to the gills, with decent 'back-end' stuff from your web designer, you can even outperform London copywriters by targeting their big-city niche market.

Just ensure you've got all your keywords in a row in all the right densities (according to Google's Algorithm of the Month). Last time I looked, you'll want your top keywords in your H1 line (the page headline) and the H2 lines (otherwise knows as subheadings).

Here's where you can score over those London copywriters. Prepare a website page all about London copywriters and copywriting, explain how you can save clients money on those big-city copywriters' fees, tell everyone that you have no lava lamps or oak flooring to pay for, sprinkle liberally with 'London copywriter' keywords, and Robert's your dad's brother.

Aim for a keyword density of about 5%. So, in a 300-word page about London copywriters, you'd be using those words 15 times. A word count of 200-300 words should be just fine and dandy, too. 'Longtail' keywords should do the trick - you know, geographical ones targeting London.

The next step is to chuck in a few backlinks, in the form of high-PR websites that link through to your own, and sit back and wait for your site to climb the North face of Google.

Of course, there's no intrinsic reason why London copywriters should be any better than copywriters from Birmingham or Leeds or Manchester. You could argue that the truly creative 20-something copywriter would be more likely to hang out in London, but, creativity aside, some of those 20-somethings can barely string a sentence together these days.

No, your experienced copywriters are much more likely to have moved out into the shires. Living costs are less expensive out there, which means that copywriting fees will be, too.

London businesses might contact you in the mistaken belief you're in London but, let's be honest, how often do copywriters in London meet their clients anyway? It's getting rarer. By the time you've dazzled the client with your sales pitch, they'll have long forgotten that you're in Edinburgh or Bristol.
