Choose the right tinder. Tinder is any natural material that will ignite a fire once enough friction has begun to create heat. Small twigs, dry moss and leaves are good examples of tinder. Set the tinder aside to use later. - 2

Gather wood for the fire. Ensure the wood is dry and all different sizes. Dead wood works well to start a fire. If the ground is wet, search for dead branches to cut. Place the wood close by as it will be needed once the fire begins to ignite. - 3

Break a stick in half. The stick should have a flat side for rubbing. Use a knife to shave a hole in the stick. Sharpen the end of the other stick until a point is made. Place the pointy stick close to the hole. Use the pointy stick to rub against the other stick until pieces of the wood are coming apart and rise up. Rub the sticks together until the wood is raised around the hole. - 4

Place the pointy stick on the other stick lying on the ground in the area where the wood has been raised with the pointy side down. Twist the stick rapidly using both hands until friction begins. Friction will start and heat will be generated. Add dry leaves, dead grass and other materials that will ignite easily to the middle of the fire area. - 5

Blow on the two sticks being rubbed together to assist with starting the fire. Place tinder on the area once a fire has started. Add larger pieces of wood after the fire has been established. Stack the wood around the fire to let in oxygen. Continue adding wood to ensure the fire does not go out.
