Realizing that the use of pesticides and fertilizers are detrimental to our health and our planet, people are changing their eating habits by either including or going completely to organic foods in their diet.
Organic vegetable gardening is not really a new concept; it was quite prevalent during ancient times when there were no synthetic chemicals.
People thought that science and technology could help us make a better quality of crops by using chemical or inorganic fertilizer.
We were so heavily blinded by technology that we didn't consider the consequences using chemicals would cause.
And we didn't consider what it would do to the soil under our feet.
Our earth has been here ever since time immemorial.
While our planet is composed of 2/3 water, the rest is land.
The remaining 1/3 is composed of the land, soil and fertile ground which we use for agriculture and growing our food.
Water is a necessary part of the growing process.
Ancient people used irrigation to make the water flow from lakes and rivers right into their farms.
As time marched on this was modified and improved by modern science into a much advanced technology.
Pipes were used to distribute water to ever increasing distances from the source.
Scientists even developed a way to produce an artificial rain, making it easier for the farmers to maintain their crops without worrying about droughts.
However, between the planting of the seeds up to the crops being harvested, farmers always need to be on the look-out for pests.
Pest infestations can aggravate any potential problems farmers may already have.
Early farmers and those doing organic farming today avail themselves of help provided by other creatures.
By creating a natural environment for birds, frogs, and toads, the farmer can enlist their help in dealing with garden/farm pests.
This may no longer be so popular as organic types of fertilizers and pesticides have made their way to the market.
But for the small gardener they may still prove to be both cost effective and helpful in the garden.
One other thing that needs to be kept in mind is that of crop rotation.
By planting the same seeds year after year in the same are the soil's nutrients are depleted and the quality of the harvest decreases year by year.
While farmers are well aware of this phenomenon, the small gardener also needs to consider this as they plan what they will plant that year.
Recent studies show that in the near future, there will be quite a demand for organic food since people are becoming aware of the consequences or the effects of using pesticides and inorganic fertilizers on crops.
It is known now that it not only affects our health but also poses serious risks to our planetary environment.
We can all extend a helping hand to nature by not using pesticides and inorganic fertilizers and by consuming more of organic food.
