Avoiding Embarrassment at the Office Christmas Party

We've probably all done it - drank too much at the office Christmas party, gone home, and woke up the next day uncertain of what exactly happened. We drag ourselves to work the next day, red in the face, as our colleagues point at us. Yet, we are still thinking over what on earth happened! If you don't want to be the centre of gossip for a week, I suggest next year's party may need a different approach.

Statistics demonstrate that around 30-50% of employees behave badly at least once at Christmas parties, these include drinking far too much, telling your boss what you really think of him and office romances. With these disturbing statistics, it's no wonder people feel embarrassed to go back to the Christmas this year. Here's a few ways to avoid those embarrassing scenarios in order to help you return to this year's Christmas party.

Problem: Drinking far to much
Solution: These may sound like no fun, but try to avoid too much alcohol. Limit yourself to drinking one type of alcoholic beverage and only drink a few. Drink water in-between as this will sober you up a little, as well as re-hydrate the body and most importantly avoid a hangover. You can still enjoy yourself with a few tipples and then spend the night dancing.

Problem: Insulting the boss
Solution: Insulting the boss is never a good idea, especially when alcohol is involved. But if the urge to insult your boss gets the better of you, I suggest you try to avoid being left alone in conversation with him. Why not instead stick with a few of your close colleagues and enjoy the night.

Problem: Office romantic encounters
Solution: When we start to drink, we tend to get what is aptly known as 'beer goggles'. Don't let the beer goggles lead you to the man embarrassingly crumping on the dance floor, who is obviously so not your type -as you may end up waking up next to him! Entering a romantic encounter when you have a few is bound to blind you a little, plus, if he wants a little bit more this is bound to complicate things later on. Either make a pact with a few friends to declare the night romance free, or simply asked a good friend to carefully remind you that this may not be the right person or time. Or alternatively, if you want to make a pass, make sure he's comfortable with the situation.

Enjoy your night sensibly at a Christmas party as you don't want to make a bad impression upon your boss and colleagues. But don't be a party pooper either, just relax and have fun.
