The 4 Things You Must Know About Oral Yeast Infections

Oral yeast infection is quite serious and should not be taken lightly.
I've gathered 4 important points that you should know about to help you and the people you know be cured from this disease.
What is it and what causes it? They are fungal infections caused by the species Candida albicans and infects the moist mucous membranes of the mouth.
In adults it can be caused by autoimmune disorders while on the other hand, they are usually found on the temples of infants.
Actually 30-60% of healthy people have Candida albicans in their mouth living peacefully and not harming their human host.
The only time they're infectious is when certain body conditions in the person's body occur.
Examples of these are:
  • AIDS and other autoimmune diseases
  • antibiotic therapy (taking antibiotics isn't always a good idea)
  • wearing dentures
  • stress, anxiety or depression
  • pregnancy
What do they look like? They look like white thick and lacy milk curds inside your mouth including your tongue.
If you try to scrape them, they cause bleeding.
It is very difficult for the infected individuals to eat and swallow food.
On babies, restlessness or irritation when feeding is observed.
Because it's difficult for the infected person to eat or swallow, you should be extra careful not to get them dehydrated.
The disease could also spread through the liver, lungs and skin if they have a weak immune system.
How is thrush diagnosed? A physician will examine the mouth of the patient.
The diagnosis is confirmed if there is yeast found in the scraping of the lesion via microscopic examination.
If the thrush also affects the esophagus, more diagnostic tests such as x-rays, throat cultures and endoscopy is done.
If the person you know is infected with the disease and hasn't taken any fluids for 12 hours, see a doctor and seek medical treatment.
As I've said, it's very important that the patient is not dehydrated.
How can I prevent oral yeast infections? Be sure to observe good oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth at least twice daily and don't forget to floss once a day.
If you're using dentures, wash them after every meal.
As with the other form of yeast infections, reducing food rich in sugar will help in avoiding them.
Oral yeast infections are not pretty and can be very alarming but they are treatable.
If you or know someone who's suffering from it, seek medical help immediately.
Be observant and help other people by educating them about this disease.
