- 1). Turn off the power to the recessed light fixture at the wall switch, or turn off the breaker inside your home's main service panel that supplies electricity to the recessed light circuit.
- 2). Twist the recessed lighting bulb counterclockwise with your fingers to remove it from the recessed light socket if the bulb is exposed. Reach inside the recessed fixture and grab the small springs holding the open shade to the recessed housing. Stretch the spring to unhook it from the fixture and release the shade.
- 3). Grab the edge of the closed recessed lighting shade with your fingers where it touches the ceiling if the recessed light bulb is not exposed. Pull down on the shade until you can see the metal butterfly springs on each side of the shade. Squeeze the springs with your thumb and forefinger to release it from the U-brackets holding it in the recessed housing.
- 4). Place the replacement open recessed light shade over the recessed light fixture. Hold the shade with one hand while stretching the springs attached to the shade with your fingers. Hook the end of the spring into any open slot inside the recessed fixture. Insert the light bulb into the recessed socket and turn it clockwise.
- 5). Squeeze the butterfly springs on each side of the closed recessed light shade. Insert the springs into the fixture, placing the ends of the springs into the U-brackets located inside the recessed light fixture. Push the shade into the fixture and against the ceiling.
